Server Error in ‘/’ Application. Runtime Error on opening a SharePoint site


Got this error while opening a SharePoint site.

Changing custom error to Off it showed  the following error

Line 1:  <browsers>
Line 2:      <browser id="Safari2" parentID="Safari1Plus">
Line 3:          <controlAdapters>

Data at the root level is invalid. Line 1, position 1.

Deleted  the _vti_cnf folder of /App_Browsers/ of the site and everything was back to normal!!!

  1. Yes I had the same error today, though not on sharepoint. Deleting the _vt-_cnf file fixed it. It started happening after my hosting company reinstalling WCF, which was not working. Must be related to this.

  2. i have two _vti_cnf folder one is on this path

    wss\VirtualDirectories\41801\_vti_cnf

    and second is on this path

    wss\VirtualDirectories\41801App_Browsers\_vti_cnf

    which one i deleted.

  3. Thaks a lot! Thats great solution for this trouble. But i want to know, why this error happen. Before this error i just make some WorkFlow in Designer, and after i have deleted some of then, everybody in the company give me a great notice: “YYO man, whats the lovely new main page we have!”. Whats happen, does have anyone some ideas? Thank you guys!

  5. when this problem happened I started to get the shakes (cold sweat) ….. omfg ive taken down the entire intranet and i dont know how or why!!!

    but…. your fix worked. Nobody even noticed. LEGEND!

  6. Wow… I’ve spent half day trying to solve this issue. It’s a real head ache. I was on the point of starting to re-design the whole Intranet when i came across your blog and it gotr solved within seconds. Thanks for the solution 🙂

  7. I configured SMTP Server for smtp.gmail.com with port 587,after configured added outgoing setting in Central administration.and apply this outgoing setting for one site also.But When i add any user on Sharepoint site it shows runtime error.All User have Email Details.
    How to resolve this error?

  9. Heya just wanted to ggive you a quick heads up and let yoou know a few
    of the pictures aren’t loading correctly. I’m not sure why but I think its a linking issue.
    I’ve tried it in two different browsers and both shgow
    thee same outcome.
